Local Producers Tour Schedule:
One of the most exciting and anticipated portions of this year's Symposium is the Local Producers Tour. Symposium attendees will have the opportunity to get on-location at a variety of sustainable agriculture facilities throughout the Gunnison Valley. These facilities include grass fed ranches, a backyard a garden and a renewably powered greenhouse. Check out the tour schedule below for times, locations and information about what you can expect to see and learn at each site. Please note: Limited transportation provided. Tour attendees are encouraged to carpool, departing from the Aspinall Wilson Center parking lot at 1:30 p.m.
Schedule:
1:30 pm: Prepare to depart to tour stop 1.
2 – 2:45 pm: Tour stop 1- Parker Pastures in Doyleville, near Gunnison, CO Parker Pastures, a grass-based operation using Holistic Management raises grass-fed beef, pasture-raised eggs, pasture-raised pork and operates a small, grass-based dairy. On the tour, attendees can expect to learn about short-duration/high intensity grazing management and all of its benefits, examine the sustainable, grass-based dairy, gather eggs from the 'Eggmobile', observe pasture-raised hens and hogs as they forage and express their 'animal-ness' and learn about ecological and health benefits of grass-based foods.
2:45 pm: Travel to next tour location.
3:00 – 3:30 pm: Tour stop 2 – Home of Karen Immerso and Paul Duba in Gunnison, CO Master gardeners Karen and Paul will show tour-goers the possibilities of backyard food production in a small space using sustainable methods.
3:30 pm: Travel to next tour location.
4 – 4:45 pm: Tour stop 3 - Jack’s Cabin Graziers, north of Almont, CO At this high altitude organic, grass-fed ranch we’ll learn about sustainably raising beef and lamb.
4:45 pm: Travel to next tour location.
5:00 – 5:45 pm: Tour stop 4 – Round Mountain Organics (RMO) with Nancy Wicks, near Crested Butte South, CO RMO grows wholesome organic food and flowers using Permaculture and Bio-Dynamic methods. The 2700 sq foot greenhouse gets all of its electricity from the sun and wind. Animals and humans reside in earth-friendly straw bale structures. Tour attendees will learn about these facilities in conjunction with year-round greenhouse production.
